An interesting article about some problems with the CATIE study. Though the author's right in pointing out the dosage issues, CATIE did raise a very important point about antipsychotic drugs. Some have very significant and very serious effects on weight and metabolic issues (eg, cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk factors). Considering that schizophrenia is a lifelong disease requiring long-term use of medications, the metabolic side-effect profile of a drug is also an important consideration when weighing treatment options. CATIE certainly points out a need for further research into this problem. Dianne Rees, PhD
