In this article, the authors feel people with mental illnesses can "recover," but then goes on to describe what recovery means. "The goal of the recovery process is not to become normal. The goal is to embrace our human vocation of becoming more deeply, more fully human". However, to me, recovery would mean finding the gene or the epigenetic solution to turning the malfunctioning part of the gene on or off, and actually eradicating the disease. We are a long way away from that.
Nice summary of some longitudinal studies within a good frame - recovery is possible - for schizophrenics. I thought that, although a bit dry, the content was good and ultimately optimistic.
